Growing up with a mother diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), I witnessed the tremendous impact this disease had on her health and wellbeing. MS is frequently called an invisible disease, meaning its symptoms are only evident to those suffering from it. With this in mind, I set out to create a visual language—using simple and approachable icons—to spread awareness and spark conversation around MS. I distributed these symbols through printed cards and a softcover book and created #MSvisible to inspire an open dialogue on social media.

After launching #MSvisible, I was approached by several patient advocacy groups to use my icons. Since then, #MSvisible has been distributed to National MS Society chapters, adapted by Johns Hopkins Neurology Center, and incorporated into elementary school education programs. This seemingly simple campaign has enabled countless patients to explain their symptoms to friends, family and caregivers, raising awareness and bettering their level of care.
