Inspired by the artwork of Chuck Close, I designed an exhibit to shed light on his artistic process. Researching and investigating his work led me to uncover his struggles with learning differences in grade school, the loss of his father at a young age, his fight with prosopagnosia (face blindness) and his spinal artery collapse that forever changed his world. These battles that Close works to overcome appear in his artwork. By using a grid structure underneath his portraits, he works to suit his unique learning style. Through producing work that focuses on portraits of those he cares about, he attempts wo work around his face blindness, painting and creating to memorize the faces of whom he loves. Through the Chuck Up Close exhibit, I spread awareness of Chuck Close’s art therapy use, and share with others what a powerful tool art can be.
